Stuffed Buffalo Head Pins Man in Va.

Another bizarre story I just had to share with my fellow campers!

Jim Harris spent four years in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and has thrown Hells Angels out of Maine's biggest biker bar — and never suffered a scratch.

But when a stuffed water-buffalo head with large horns fell off the wall, it took four 911 responders to pull the trophy off of him.

The 56-year-old Harris was in his comfy recliner in his rented waterfront home in Tavernier when, he said: "I leaned over to turn on the lamp and ka-pow."

"Bubba," the 200-pound head of a water buffalo shot in Africa, fell off the wall and landed on his head and right side.

The impact knocked him out.

"I guess it's payback for the buffalo, but I'm not even the guy who shot him," Harris said. "It's not even mine. I don't even like hunting."

When the 6-foot-2-inch, 220-pound Harris returned to consciousness more than two hours later, he was trapped under the water buffalo's head.

He was able to reach his cell phone and managed to call 911.
Because he could not put the phone next to his ear to hear what the dispatcher was saying, he just kept repeating his address and saying, "I'm trapped. I'm crushed."

Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies and emergency workers had no idea what to expect when they arrived a few minutes later.

Harris said he was in excruciating pain. He said it took four of them to lift the water-buffalo head.
Rex Andis, who owns Bubba and the house rented to Harris, said it originally took four people to mount the wildlife trophy on the wall.

"I looked like the Michelin man when they took me to the hospital," said Harris, who had been stabilized for a possible broken neck.

"I was stuck with needles and had all these IVs in me, and the nurses were all laughing their heads off," Harris said.

He was treated for bruises, a concussion and pinched nerves, and released.

Bubba appeared to be just fine but will have to move.
"I told Rex I want it out of here," Harris said of the head.

8 Ways to Keep Mosquitoes at Bay

Don’t let these blood suckers ruin your outdoor fun

Getting rid of the swarming summertime pests doesn’t have to involve harsh pesticides or gimmicky products, but it does require vigilance.

For people who want to keep their yards both livable for humans and ecologically healthy during the buggy summer months, here’s the bad news: There is no proven effective mosquito solution as simple as buying a zapper or lighting a citronella candle. Still, that doesn’t mean homeowners are helpless. Consider the following:
mosquito
1. Play water detective: Get rid of any standing water around your home—that’s where mosquitoes lay eggs! Remember that mosquitoes can lay eggs in tiny pools—even the size of a bottle cap. Also, check the places you can’t see, such as rain gutters.
2. Employ fish: If you have an ornamental pond in your yard, find out if your local health department hands out mosquitofish, or Gambusia. As with all species not native to your region, exercise caution in releasing the fish.

3. Screen it: If you collect rainwater for irrigation, be sure to put a screen or filter—even an old pair of pantyhose will work—over the opening of the barrel.

4. Use mosquito dunks: If your yard has any unavoidable standing water, use mosquito “dunks”—usually donut-shaped disks of biopesticide that kill mosquito larvae but are harmless to humans, pets and wildlife.

5. Don’t be fooled: Remember that “natural” or “plant-based” doesn’t always mean safe—or effective. Do the appropriate research to ensure that your mosquito-controlling pesticides aren’t harmful to wildlife or pets.

6. Avoid what DOESN’T work: Studies have routinely shown disappointing results for just about every nonchemical means of repelling or killing adult mosquitoes: ultrasonic repellents, zappers and traps.

7. Use repellant: The most popular repellant is the chemical N,N-diethyl-mtoluamide, or DEET. Because of rare cases of human adverse reactions to the chemical, you might try lemon eucalyptus, a natural repellent that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says provides “reasonably long-lasting protection.” Regardless of which repellent you use, always read and follow the manufacturer's dircetions. For more about the safe use of repellents, visit the CDC website.

8. Call in the pros. Almost every state or municipality has some sort of vector control agency—often run out of the health department. Along with a practiced eye, a vector control officer can look beyond a backyard to a larger area for the source of a mosquito infestation.

200 Pound Bear Rescued from Oxnard Tree in California

I know as a camper myself, many of us have at least had a bear enter our campsite at night looking for food.  I remember as a kid camping with my family on the Tennessee River one year when I had my first bear experience.  We were all sleeping in our tents and I was the only one who woke up to the sound of him sniffing around the door of our tent.  I could see him from where I was sleeping through the screen mesh, and I was terrified!  I recalled that I had been taught to just lay still and play dead (which by the way is very difficult for a child to do when there is a big bear trying to get in her tent!).  I remember once he wandered off finally being able to breathe after holding my breath for what seemed like an eternity.  It was then that I woke my parents so they could scope out our campsite for safety.  Beautiful animals, but such terrifying power they hold!

A 200-pound bear climbed a tree in Oxnard and fell asleep for more than two hours.

This bear had several tranquilizer darts stuck in its side and was perched in a precarious position.

OXNARD, Calif. -- Fire crews on Tuesday morning were working to rescue a bear that ran around a Ventura County neighborhood for hours before climbing a tree at a cemetery and taking a long nap.

The 200-pound bear was partially tranquilized and had at least three darts stuck in its side when it fell asleep about 25-feet up in the tree, wedged in branches.

The bear was reported prowling a neighborhood near Santa Clara Cemetery just after 2 a.m. Tuesday. It was first spotted in the parking lot of a fire station on Vineyard Avenue, then up a tree in a condominium complex.

The bear eventually climbed the cemetery wall and made itself comfortable in the tree for more than two hours with its head and feet dangling the entire time.

Fish and Game officials along with the fire department worked to safely remove the groggy bear using harnesses and a ladder truck.

Crews cut down some branches and, around 9 a.m., carefully lifted the sleeping bear out of the tree.

Fish and Game experts bundled the bear in a tarp, and police say it will be released in Los Padres National Forest.

Man 'Survives Without Food' For 70 Years

Imagine getting lost in the wilderness while out on a camping trip with no food or water?  This guy thinks it's a piece of cake (no pun intended).  Indian doctors are studying a remarkable 83-year-old holy man who claims to have spent the last seven decades without food and water.

Man 'Survives Without Food' For 70 Years

Military medics hope the experiments on Prahlad Jani can help soldiers develop their survival strategies.

The long-haired and bearded yogi is under 24-hour observation by a team of 30 doctors during three weeks of tests at a hospital in the western city of Ahmedabad.

Two cameras have been set up in his room, while a mobile camera films him when he goes outside, guaranteeing round-the-clock observation.

His body will be scanned and his brain and heart activity measured with electrodes.

"The observation from this study may throw light on human survival without food and water," said Dr G. Ilavazahagan, who is directing the research.

"This may help in working out strategies for survival during natural calamities, extreme stressful conditions and extra-terrestrial explorations like future missions to the Moon and Mars by the human race."

Since the experiment began on April 22, Jani has neither eaten nor drunk and has not been to the toilet.

"The exercise of taking this yogi under the medical scanner is to understand what energy supports his existence," Dr Ilavazahagan added.

"Jani says he meditates to get energy. Our soldiers will not be able to meditate, but we would still like to find out more about the man and his body."

Jani, who dresses in red and wears a nose ring, grew up in Charod village in the Mehsana district in Gujarat.

He claims to have been blessed by a goddess when he was aged eight, which has enabled him to survive without sustenance.

Nudist Camp in Canada Goes Clothed After 40 Years

By ROSS ROMANIUK, QMI Agency

Former president Bob Mogliore looks out over the pool at Crocus Grove Nudist community. (QMI Agency file photo)

WINNIPEG - No more will everyone just hang out at a Manitoba nudist campground, as the park's owners try to better cover their costs by limiting their exposure to hefty water improvement bills.

After more than four decades of a "clothing-optional" attitude, what's been known as Crocus Grove Campground is changing its name this month to keep in step with a shift away from nudity among its users.

The newly named Sandhill Pines RV Park and Campground, about 40 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg, is requiring campers to begin wearing clothes when out and about at the facility, so that its owners can try to attract more customers and maintain their site's viability.

"It's too bad that it's had to go this route. That's just the way it's happened," Susan Ryynanen, who owns the park with husband Ray, said Thursday.

"We've had declining numbers in terms of clothing-optional campers, and we have to do something differently."

The 60-campsite park is asking users and guests to wear clothes for the first time since it opened in 1969. The owners say it's because of new federal and provincial regulations requiring that facilities like private campgrounds chlorinate their tap water and undertake related engineering studies.

It's going to be between $15,000 and $50,000, depending on the size of the campground, to comply," explained Susan. The Rynnanens had continued to allow nudity since purchasing the park in the Rural Municipality of Brokenhead more than three years ago.

Because their revenue potential is "extremely limited" by appealing to a naturist niche market, Ryynanen said, it's necessary to woo a wider array of campers.

"We just have to cope with the additional costs, and maintain the same size of campground," she added at the park on Provincial Road 317, where the couple live.

"So we need to go public and expand our horizons."

To distance the park from the nudity image, she said, they're using advertising and signage under the Sandhill Pines name and "don't have any affiliation with Crocus Grove at all any more."

The end of Crocus Grove's nudity, however, doesn't mean campers can't go naked anywhere in that region east of Lake Winnipeg. Ryynanen pointed out that the Patricia Beach area, a short drive north, continues to maintain a "clothing-optional" section along the lake.

The shift doesn't appear to be steering users away.

After talking to campers who have regularly used the park, Ryynanen said about 98% have indicated they'll hang around -- even if not hanging out.

"They understand. They're here because they love camping," she said.

"Everybody is sad and disappointed that we can't maintain the clothing-optional status, but the reality is that the big draw here is camping and being out in nature. It's a bit of a change, but not a complete change."

Camping Tips: How to Build a Campfire!

One of the most enjoyable things in the world is a long-burning campfire in the great outdoors. Check out these tips for getting a campfire going without harming the environment... or yourself.

Arranging Wood for a Campfire -- powered by eHow.com

About.com: How To Build a Campfire

Hey guys - Jonathon Stewart here for About.com. So you're hanging out at your campsite, you've got your tent set up, bug spray applied, the sun is setting, and just one thing seems to be missing... your roaring campfire! Take a look at the following tips, and you'll be eating smores and telling ghost stories before you know it. Check it out.

Supplies Needed to Build a Campfire

You'll need just a few things to get your fire going:
  • tinder
  • kindling
  • wood
  • matches
Find a Safe Space to Build a Campfire

Before you do anything, you need to pick a safe spot to make your fire. Many campsites have fire rings like this one, which you should definitely use if it's provided. If not, pick an area that's away from trees or flammable brush, and make your own fire ring from large rocks. In any event, make sure your tent is a good ten or fifteen yards away, or you just might be singing, "the tent, the tent, the tent is on fire..."

Arrange the Campfire Tinder

Start by clearing away any old coals or pieces of debris, so you have a clean slate. Next, gather together your tinder. Tinder should be a natural material that's easy to light, and burns quickly. Dried brush or small fallen twigs fit the bill, but as long as you're not stranded in the middle of nowhere, newspaper does the trick just fine. Take single sheets and crumple them into tennis ball sized wads - about 12 to 15 will do.

Just make sure it's not laminated paper or anything that's drenched in chemicals. And, on that note, no using lighter fluid or any other synthetic fire-starter here either. You're on Mother Nature's turf here - have a little respect.

Add the Campfire Kindling

Next, it's time for your kindling, which is loosely defined as small pieces of wood that should ignite relatively easily, but burn long enough to catch your wood on fire. Dried bark or small pieces of wood work best here - arrange them in either an X pattern or a teepee pattern. Just make sure there's room for air to move easily to all parts of your fire.

Light the Campfire

Before we light this puppy, just remember: safety first. Never put your head too close to wood that can pop and crackle when lit, and never leave your fire unattended. As the old bear fella says, "Only YOU can prevent forest fires."

Add Wood to the Campfire

Finally, add your wood to the pile, again being careful not to smother the kindling or tinder. Make sure your wood is properly aged and dry, otherwise lighting it will be an uphill battle. Light the tinder from all four compass points, and allow it to slowly catch.
As the tinder ignites, slowly blow air into the fire to allow it to burn hot enough for the kindling to catch. Continue this process until the wood ignites, then sit back, relax, and continue adding wood as you go.

Be sure to spread the coals out and sprinkle water on your fire to douse it before going to sleep. You can also use dirt to smother the fire, or just stay up all night, enjoying the world the way we used to before electricity came along and ruined everything.

Now all you need is an RV to take on your camping trip! =)

Crazy Barking Dog Man Becomes Internet Hit

Since many of us RVers like to take our pets with us on the road, I thought you guys might enjoy this story.

A man who gave a bizarre impression of a barking dog during a recent news interview - has become an online sensation. I don't even know what to say about this man really.....

The clip of Ray Graham, 57, being interviewed about dogs terrorising a street in Sydney became an instant hit online after it was aired on Channel Nine.

After outlining his concerns about the animals, he gave an impression of a vicious dog -- much to the apparent disgust of his wife. I actually thought she was going to backhand him.

The impression earned him the name 'psycho dog man' on YouTube and a Facebook fan page was set up in his honour which has over 6,000 fans. Psycho dog man?  I can't imagine WHY.

As if the original clip was not good enough it has now been remixed with the song "Who let the dogs out?" -- Check it out after the link.

So maybe those of us who don't have pets can take a lesson from the psycho dog man and just start doing dog impressions at the RV parks for fun, eh? Okay, so maybe not....I think I'll just leave that up to Mr. Psycho dog man since he does it so well.  Ha!

Two Fighter Jets Chasing UFO in Britain Captured on Video

A cameraman accidentally captured two British fighter jets pursuing what looked like a UFO. The dramatic video clip is about 30-second long, which is believed to have been taken from a West Midlands service station car park in Britain.

“This is one of the best videos I’ve seen. It could be a new drone – that might explain the military jets,”  the Sun quoted expert Nick Pope, who probed UFO sightings for the Ministry of Defense.

“But you don’t normally test-fly secret projects in daylight. Alternatively, this could be the real thing – a UFO in our airspace and military aircraft scrambled to intercept, probably due to it being tracked on radar,” he added.

This is the “UFO” as seen from the video.

Two British fighter jets were chasing the “UFO”.

The British defense ministry refused to comment on the alleged sighting, but confirmed it would scramble jets to meet an air threat.

Watch the short video clip here, it’s interesting!

Glow in the Dark Pets? YIKES!

Me-yow! This cat has a glow — for a good cause

First fluorescent cat in U.S. will aid endangered species ... and humans, too

By Michael Inbar

TODAYshow.com contributor

For brightness, glowworms got nothing on Mr. Green Genes. And for fright factor, neither do black cats. The 6-month-old feline may look like a standard-issue orange tabby in the comfort of daylight, but he turns a ghoulish shade of fluorescent green under the shroud of darkness!

But there’s no need to get spooked; Mr. Green Genes is not a ghastly creation out of a Halloween horror story. The glow-in-the-dark cat is the result of a genetic experiment gone right, not awry; he was cloned at the Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans to aid endangered species ... and down the line, humans as well.

The phosphorescent feline made his national television debut on TODAY Thursday. The studio went dark and Mr. Green Genes’ ears, nose and eyes glowed under an ultraviolet light.

The green gene

Betsy Dresser, senior vice president for the institute, explained to TODAY’s Amy Robach the process of producing a kitty that strangely glows, but is otherwise as normal as any of its brethren. “Two of our scientists at the center worked together with the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center,” Dresser said. “They introduced a gene that would then produce a protein that glowed fluorescent green.”

While it’s certainly a neat scientific parlor trick, Dresser told TODAY the research that led to the glowing cloned Mr. Green Genes is vitally serious — both to combat animal diseases via gene therapy and, later, to increase the possibility of inserting good genes into humans while taking bad genes out.

But to verify that the gene implants were working, scientists needed to try them out on a cat, because the animals have much of the same genetic makeup as humans. And to see if the genes actually made it into the finished, cloned cat, a gene was inserted that produces a fluorescent protein.

“We wanted to know for sure that we could insert this gene into a cell and have it multiply,” Dresser explained. “If nothing glows, we wouldn’t know if the gene was really inserted. So, because it glows, we know we inserted the gene and were successful with that technique.”

The nose glows

While Mr. Green Genes pawed playfully and rolled on his back for handler Kelly Trimble, Dresser explained that all the cat’s skin cells glow with the green fluorescent protein but, because it’s a furry critter, only the eyes, ears and nose display wattage under ultraviolet. “If we were to shave him, he would glow totally,” Dresser told Robach.

Dresser was also quick to note there is nothing cruel and unusual involved in producing a cat that glows in the dark. “It’s totally harmless,” Dresser said. “He’s just a normal cat; he doesn’t know he’s glowing.”

As host Amy Robach looks on, Mr. Green Genes’ handlers prepare to expose the cat to an ultraviolet lamp.

Normal or not, Mr. Green Genes might one day be considered a pioneer and hero in the advancement of genetics. For example, in endangered animal species that carry a gene making them prone to a specific disease, that gene could be pulled out at the embryo stage to give the species a better chance at surviving and prospering.

For mankind, it might lead to new innovations in treating diabetes, Dresser said. “In a diabetic human, there are genes that make insulin. If we can insert genes that make diabetics produce their own insulin, then we hope to stop diabetes.

“It’s helpful to both animals and humans,” she added.

But that’s the future. In the present, Mr. Green Genes can look forward to a normal life — unless he’s exposed to a black light, the secret of his glow is safe.

And Mr. Green Genes’ offspring might have a bright future too, Dresser said. “We’ll breed him and we’ll see if his kids glow, too!”

Wouldn't this be great for our hairy friends on our camping trips.  No chance of him getting lost in the dark!  What a novel idea!

Extreme golf shot ... off a 430m cliff ($1 million prize)

This is the hardest golf shot in the world, from the top of a 430m mountain, over a forest and onto the green below.

But should any golfer be able to make what has been dubbed 'the Everest of golf shots' with a hole in one they will pocket a prize of $1million (£660,000).  Yeah, this shot is going to take a lot of balls!!  I'm jus' sayin'!  Now this would be a successful camping trip!

The Extreme 19th hole is part of the Legend Golf and Safari Resort in South Africa on the top of the impressive Hanglip Mountain.

At 587m it is the longest Par 3 in the world and balls take 30 seconds to to reach the green from the 430m mountain tee.

Don't expect to get there on a golf buggy either, the tee is accessible only by an helicopter ride.

"Golfers are invited to tee-off from the edge of the mountain in an attempt to hit a hole-in-one on the 19th located at the bottom of the cliff." said a spokesperson for the course.

"A hole-in-one will soon earn the lucky golfer $1m. Well I don't know about the "soon" part! The Extreme 19th, makes for a very unique and exciting golfing experience."

Legend Resort
